Due to a request from a footwear expert for the St. Louis Metropolitan Police Department (SLMPD) Crime Lab, WGHS forensic science students have been collecting photographs and data from non-name brand shoes since 2001 (WGHS is the only source, besides the FBI, for data on non-name brand shoes sold at PAYLESS and Wal-Mart). This information is edited by students, saved in multiple forms, then sent to the FBI to be used as needed in investigating crimes. This data is also available to anyone in law enforcement by request through the Advanced Forensic Science Research webpage.
The goal of this proposal is to provide a reliable method for making data about footwear available to as many law enforcement agencies as possible while continuing to provide students with the opportunity to work with data and its applications to the worldwide community. The purchase of a server will allow for storage of and easier access to the data we collect from footwear. We will be able to make the project, which began in 2001 for the FBI and the SLMPD Crime Lab, grow to fit the needs of a nationwide and, possibly, worldwide community. The fact that high school students can make such a significant difference in the ability of law enforcement to prosecute criminals can be highly motivational to students.
